On April 12, 2019, through the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund and in cooperation with the World Food Program (WFP), the launching ceremony of the Chinese government’s emergency food aid to five African countries was held in Shanghai. Attending were dozens of people including representatives of the China International Development Cooperation Agency and the Ministry of Commerce, envoys of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in China and representatives of the World Food Program. Deputy Director of the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges Zhang Yi attended the launching ceremony too.
Spokesman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency Tian Lin said that when African friends are in great needs, we will offer timely help, fully demonstrating China’s firm determination to practice the principles of sincerity, real results, affinity and good faith and the principle of pursing the greater good and shared interests. It is also China’s important action of implementing the results of the Beijing Summit of the 2018 China-Africa Cooperation Forum, helping Africa to achieve food security and sustainable development and building a China- Africa community of shared future.
Deputy Director of MOFCOM Department of Outward Investment and Economic Cooperation Wang Yu said that as China’s executive department of foreign aid, the Ministry of Commerce and the WFP have carried out many humanitarian aid cooperation to help people in developing countries suffering from disasters and conflicts. The food aid materials shipped today is one of the vivid manifestations of the Chinese government's promotion of building a human community of shared future.
Deputy Director of the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges Zhang Yi pointed out that this batch of food not only embodies the Chinese people's friendship with African people, but also means strong management responsibility. Today’s launching ceremony is only the beginning of our food support project for the five African countries. Together with WFP, under the guidance of the Ministry of Commerce, we will work closely with the recipient governments to carry out follow-up customs clearance, inspection and warehousing and distribution work.
The envoys of the relevant countries expressed their gratitude to the Chinese government for its emergency humanitarian assistance. They believed this will help hundreds of thousands of people facing the threat of hunger and malnutrition in Africa and will effectively alleviate the food security crisis facing the relevant countries, reflecting China’s deep friendship with Africa.
After the speeches, the guests visited the warehouse where the grain was stored, and saw bags of food printed with the logo of China’s Foreign Aid was being packed. The staff said this batch of food will ship along the ancient Maritime Silk Road and is expected to arrive in Africa in 60 days.
In recent years, influenced by various factors such as natural disasters, the food insecurity in African countries has deteriorated, and people in many African countries are facing serious threats of continuous famine and malnutrition. To help African countries cope with the food crisis, the Chinese government, in cooperation with the UN World Food Program, through the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund, implemented emergency food aid to countries such as Somalia, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
